Entering the Golden Haiku Contest
The Golden Haiku contest welcomes submissions from poets of all ages and experience levels. Following the Haiku Society of America’s guidelines, the competition embraces contemporary haiku, freeing poets from the traditional 5-7-5 syllable structure and encouraging evocative language to express a moment or observation.
Submissions are typically open from December to January, with specific dates announced each year. Participants can submit up to two original haiku via an online form. While previously published works are accepted, each participant can only enter once. Winners are notified by email and publicly announced in March.
Judging and Prizes
A distinguished panel of haiku experts judges the submissions, selecting winners in various categories, including adult (first, second, and third place, plus a regional/D.C. favorite) and youth (high school and elementary/middle school, with additional regional/D.C. awards).
Prizes range from $75 to $500, and winning haiku are displayed on colorful signs adorning tree boxes along iconic D.C. streets from March through early May, adding splashes of color and inspiration to the cityscape.
The 2025 Golden Haiku Contest
